K9 Connection is a LA-based non-profit focused on serving people experiencing homelessness and their dogs. The program operates under the umbrella of The People Concern, one of LA County’s largest social services agencies. Their model of integrated and comprehensive care empowers people experiencing homelessness and survivors of domestic violence to navigate the multi-faceted obstacles in their lives, become their best selves and ultimately, connect with and contribute to their communities.
In conjunction with Heed and other partners, Pets Landing hosts free clinics, where a team of veterinarians and vet techs treat pets with services that include physical exams, vaccinations, parasite control, spay/neuter vouchers and grooming. Participants also receive gift bags with a bag of Heed Foods, blankets, leashes, bowls, treats, toys and other pet supplies.
As of January 2020, more than 4,600 people experiencing homelessness were found to be living in Skid Row – they account for slightly more than 10% of the city’s overall homeless population. It is estimated that our quarterly clinics in Skid Row serve at least 500 companion animals and Venice Beach bi-annual clinics serve at least 360 companion animals each year.
“When I was trying to look for help, a lot of people made it worse by telling me to give my dogs away. No way. They’re like my family. I’m attached to them, they’re attached to me. When I was on the street, they always looked after me.”
Jose and his dogs Bosco, Guerra and Lucky.
